Lynn-hugging-Gerry-w.jpg

Since 1971, Dr. Rogers has conducted research through the nonprofit Wildlife Research Institute with the objective of educating people on what wild bears are really like.

He has published over 100 articles. He has appeared on the Discovery channel, National Geographic Explorer's "Bear talk", "PBS" Nature and is the subject of Animal Planet's documentary : " The man who walks with bears"

Thanks to Dr. Lynn Rogers for his agreement to publish this article below in which he speaks about his action.

After working with wild black bears for 43 years I can say they are not the ferocious animals usually portrayed.

For research, we used to capture and tranquilize them.

Now, Sue Mansfield and I earn their trust, put radio-collars on them without using tranquilizers, and walk with them.  We learn so much more now. You can see some of the videos of these wild bears at www.bear.org.
.

At this moment, you can also see a mother and cub live in a wild den.  She trusted us enough to not abandon the den when we introduced the camera.

One of the biggest myths about black bears is about mothers defending cubs against people.

We have caught many in front of mothers we didn’t know.
The cubs were screaming for help. The mothers often charged. None made contact. There are so many misconceptions about bears.

The misconceptions are believed by the public and by wildlife professionals. They are the basis for much of bear management.
At the North American Bear Center in Ely, Minnesota, misconceptions are replaced with scientific facts"
